Men are tired of their portrayal in advertising, according to a new book by Michael Buerk. But images of men behaving stupidly is not the only cliche which irritates writer John Camm.

Dad in muddy boots walking blithely across a kitchen floor just cleaned by an exasperated mum who just gives a frustrated but loving smile to her giggly children, who cry out: "Da-a-ad!".

Just one advertising cliche, and just one where no-one behaves like people really do.

It's the kind of thing which irritates John Camm. "It's tiresome to see male characters in adverts who don't resemble anyone you know," he says. "But what's perhaps worse is the absolute reliance of advertising on its own regurgitated cliches."

He has drawn up a list of seemingly unwritten rules which, he concludes, might as well be the Advertising Bible. Add your views to his list at the foot of the page.

1. Men are obsessed with sex but will forego sex in order to watch football or drink beer.

2. Women are locked in a constant battle with their weight/body shape/hairstyle.

3. Career success is entirely based on your ability to impress your boss.

4. Mums are often harassed but NEVER depressed/unable to cope.

5. Any act of male stupidity (e.g. walking across a clean floor in muddy boots, putting the dog in the dishwasher, etc.) will be met with a wry smile, not genuine annoyance/anger.

6. Married men will flirt with other, younger women but NEVER act upon it.

7. Anyone with a scientific career will have a bad haircut and dreadful clothes.

8. If you work for the emergency services, you are a better person than the general population.

9. Elderly relatives NEVER suffer from senile dementia.

10. Scandinavians are, without exception, blonde and beautiful.

11. Women have jobs they never do in real life, e.g. dockworker (who looks like a model).

12. Children will not eat fruit or vegetables. Ever.

13. Both men and women find driving deeply pleasurable, never boring or stressful.

14. Men are inherently lazy/slobbish; women are the reverse.

15. Chocolate, however, will cause women to immediately fall into the languor of the opium eater.

16. High Street bank staff are (A) friends of the customers, and (B) of slightly above-average attractiveness (only if female).

17. Modern men own a cat.

18. Hot beverages have miraculous rejuvenating effects.

19. Professional people have strangely trivial preoccupations, e.g. a female barrister who is morbidly obsessed with finding a healthy snack bar.

20. All women (except stay-at-home housewives) have interesting and enjoyable careers.

21. Any over-the-counter medical product will work instantly and 100% effectively.

22. Children know more than adults.

23. Women never merely hop in and out of the shower, instead preferring to act out some sort of soapy Dance of the Seven Veils.

24. School is a happy experience for all children.

25. Tortilla chips are the most exciting experience any group of young people can experience.

26. Playing bingo is THE number one pastime among 18-25 year old British women.

It’s been over six years since the War in Darfur officially began. The UN states that up to 300,000 lives have already been lost, with an additional 2.7 million driven from their homes. But while figures continue to rise, awareness of the conflict has declined, with no significant improvements in the area either. In fact, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant in early March for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, which resulted in 13 international relief agencies being kicked out of Darfur. The consequences of this decision have been dire.

So, it is with a sense of urgency that we and 11 of our favorite artists present Tiny Mix Tapes Vol. 1: Darfur. This extremely limited-edition CD/LP compilation features 11 exclusive tracks recorded specifically for the comp and/or tracks that have not been released elsewhere. 100% of the profits will be donated to the International Rescue Committee, an "independent, impartial, and secular aid organization," who are currently aiding Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad, southern Sudan, and the Central African Republic.

The LP version comes on heavyweight vinyl, housed in a beautiful jacket designed by artistKeith Kawaii, while the unique CD jacket was lovingly crafted by Stumptown Printers, an environmentally responsible Portland-based print shop. The comp was mastered by Carl Saff.

We’re not selling this compilation to make an overt political comment on the situation in Sudan; our aims, like the IRC, are humanitarian in nature. So, hopefully you’ll take as much pleasure in purchasing the comp as you will in listening to it.

Users clicking onto videos links sent via Twitter spend significantly longer watching those videos than those arriving from Digg or Facebook, according to a new study by video stats site TubeMogul.

The methodology (below) seems fairly robust, so it may offer a real insight into current Twitter usage: On Twitter you can follow interesting people, not just your friends.

The disparity of Twitter vs Digg is quite striking, with people spending less than a minute on the Digg-referred video. Perhaps this is because a link recommended on Digg could be posted with a misleading headline by someone you do not know.

With Facebook, you are more likely to know the person posting the link, but maybe your friends don’t post interesting links. Facebook video links get one minute and 14 seconds of viewing.

For video links shared via Twitter, however, users spend a full minute and 38 seconds watching them.

Why? Because Facebook focuses on who you know, while Twitter focuseswhat you know.

Twitter allows you to follow the millions of interesting people whom you do not know. These people will share great information, but you may never meet them.

Facebook, on the other hand, limits your feed to a more restricted circle. This may be interesting for intimate news (”Maisie is getting engaged”), but the open nature of Twitter allows you to peruse the best written feeds in the world on any topic you like.

TubeMogul’s Methodology: For a three-month period, we recorded a sample of 6,763,690 video streams referred by links from Digg, Facebook and Twitter. For example, if someone sent a Tweet saying “check out this video” and provided a link, we tracked any viewers that clicked the link. The streams hail from six top video sites that average in the billions of streams per month (due to partnership limitations, we cannot disclose which sites).

The Authoritative Book On Social Media Finally Published

It seems like everyone who has a blog or presence of substance in the social media space is writing a book these days. In fact, I’ve actually had several people follow up an introduction to me with, “So what book are you working on?”

I’m not presently working on a book, thank you. When I have a good idea for one, I’ll let you know.

Yes, there are a handful of very good books out there that I would recommend people read if they are interested in learning more about social media, but if you or anyone you know is presently writing a book about social media, I would encourage you to save your energy and stop right now. The authoritative book on social media marketing has finally been published.

“The New Community Rules: Marketing On The Social Web,” by Tamar Weinberg offers it all. From the strategic approach to the on-the-ground tactics and tool review, this book will give you, your bosses, co-workers or clients, a top-to-bottom and side-to-side survey of the social media world. While the book is chock full of buzz words and terms like, “join the conversation,” “participation is marketing,” and “Twitter!” it is also chock-full-o practical goodness.

Weinberg’s first large-scale published piece has in-depth looks at goal setting in the social media environment, implementing strategy, blogging, micro-blogging, social networks, social bookmarking, social news, photography-video-podcasting and pulling it all together into a cohesive take-to-market approach. There are chapter sections on everything from blog carnivals to social media monitoring services to Flickr statistics. Weinberg leaves few stones unturned in showing you, your organization or your clients how social media can transform your communications approach.

The book is written in a very easy to read and understand format, almost a Social Media for Dummies format but polished and not condescending for the not-so-dummy. Other than not including more examples of social media monitoring services (one of my favorite areas of concentration), the only criticism I have of the book is that it covers so much of the social media space so well, I have no reason to even try writing a book. At least not one about social media.

Okay, enough with the gushiness.

Tamar and I are friends. She quotes me in the book and even includes Social Media Explorer in her recommended reading list in the back. It would be tough for me not to love it.

But Tamar also knows I’m going to call it like I see it and give her an honest assessment. And, frankly, she’s freakin’ nailed it.

Accuse me of playing favorites with a friend of mine all you want, but go buy this thing and read it cover-to-cover. You’ll learn a bunch from a master of this field and you’ll probably buy 3-4 copies for a few people you know who don’t quite, “get it.”

It’s that good.

Do You Pass the Social Media Recruitment Test?

With the emergence of social media sites like LinkedIn , Facebook , andTwitter , and their user bases growing by the millions, one would think that a headhunter’s job just got much easier. I mean let’s face it; nowadays we can find anybody whether it’s on one of these social networking sites, on a blog, discussion board, alumni list or via true and tried headhunting techniques.

But it’s not that simple. In the golden days of recruiting we would hunt for days to find a candidate with a degree from a top university who worked for a top notch company who of course was considered priceless and absolutely worth contacting. Today however, we run a simple search on LinkedIn and find hundreds that match that exact profile. Or we run a quick search on Twitter for anybody discussing a specific keyword and we now have hundreds more to contact. But with only a set number of hours in a day, we just don’t have the bandwidth to contact everybody.

The problem of today completely flipped from the one of yesterday where we went from candidate scarcity and limited information to an overabundance of candidates and even more information available on each one.

So in today’s world of information overload where talent is literally available by the truckloads, I thought it would be relevant to write a post about how we evaluate a candidate’s social media footprint to determine (when all else is equal) which candidates we would contact and which ones get left by the wayside. I posed the following question to make it simple:

If all else were equal, like education, work history and general skill set, and I had to evaluate the social media footprints of two candidates to determine which one of them I would contact, which one would I contact and why? In my experience, I would contact the one who:

On LinkedIn

1. Has genuine recommendations from peers, managers and colleagues
2. Has the more complete profile
3. Is a member of more groups pertaining to their respective field
4. Has a picture
5. Lists interests, hobbies and other information related to their life outside of work
6. Participates and highlights their involvement in non-paid projects related to their field (open-source, community, volunteer, conference)
7. Updates their status more often
8. Asks and answers more questions
9. Links to their employer, blog and other projects of interest
10. Has the larger network

On their blog

1. Has interesting things to say about their respective profession and industry
2. Provides glimpses into their life outside of work – family, friends, hobbies, etc.
3. Does not bad-mouth their current or previous employer
4. Provides links to their other social networking profiles
5. Includes a link to their current resume
6. Updates with new posts regularly
7. Keeps it non-controversial – minimal discussion of sex, politics, religion and other such controversial topics.
8. Is more genuine and honest
9. Has a blogroll with link to other interesting blogs

On Facebook

1. Respects the overlap between their personal and professional lives
2. Updates often
3. Posts pictures of friends and family but keeps them pg-13
4. Keeps it non-controversial – doesn’t take extreme positions on sex, drugs, religion, politics or other topics that could cause an employer to be wary of hiring
5. Is a member of groups relevant to their profession

On Twitter

1. Tweets often (between 2-10 times per day is considered reasonable)
2. Has a healthy followers/following ratio
3. Has the biggest network
4. Keeps a healthy balance between personal and professional tweets
5. Doesn’t just update, but also responds to others and generally seems to get Twitter

When Googled

1. Does not lead to something controversial like arrests
2. Leads to profession-related discussions and commentary on other social media sites
3. Leads me to their online blog, webpage or social media profiles
4. Doesn’t come up blank

Why it matters

Now you might be asking yourself, if somebody has the skills that an employer requires, why are all of the above criteria important? The short answer is that nowadays employers rarely hire just skills and are looking for much more of a complete package – skills plus a well-rounded individual that fits well with their team and company. And a person’s social media footprint gives employers (and others) the best insight into your passions, interests, communication styles, work habits, work/life balance and all sorts of other valuable information.

Simply put, it helps an employer get to know you and get comfortable with you before a single word has even been exchanged. So think about it, if you had the choice to consider a cold bland resume or an actual person with common interests, passions and work/life style, wouldn’t the choice be obvious?

New to social media?

But what happens if you’re new to the world of Social Media and aren’t quite at the same pace as some of the veterans out there. Not to worry, just follow a few easy steps and you’ll be right into the thick of the game in absolutely no time.

1. Start ASAP!
2. Create fully completed LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter profiles.
3. Shed your preconceived notions of keeping your work and home life separate. Companies want people, not resumes. Start portraying yourself as the well-rounded individual that you are.
4. Use social media to its fullest – update often, connect with others and stay active.
5. Don’t stop ever (even if you’re happily employed and aren’t looking for new work). Establishing and maintaining a social media footprint is not an act, it’s a process. Just like your career evolves, so should your Social Media Footprint.
